Leadership hiring: From our founder’s corporate HR experience
Leadership hiring sometimes means finding the right person and then understanding why they are hesitant to join. This experience from Shobhit Tyagi’s corporate HR career shows how personal attention helped bring a business leader on board.

While working in the textile industry, Shobhit was looking for someone to lead a new cotton business vertical. The organisation needed a person with relevant experience who could give the business direction and help it grow.
He identified a strong match in NCR. But there was a challenge: the candidate did not want to relocate to Ahmedabad.
The candidate’s family, friends and established life were in NCR. Moving meant more than changing jobs—it meant leaving familiar people and surroundings behind.
He declined the opportunity.
Shobhit recognised his potential and felt a personal conversation was worth the effort. He flew to NCR and met the candidate over lunch to discuss the role and his concerns about relocating.
Following that meeting, the candidate agreed to join. He went on to help the cotton business grow to a meaningful size before eventually returning to NCR.
His contribution supported the purpose of the hire: bringing in someone who could help build the new business.
Recognising relevant experience is one part of recruitment. Understanding the person’s priorities is another.
In this case, Shobhit’s judgement helped identify a suitable leader. His willingness to travel and have a direct conversation helped turn that potential into an appointment.
Finding the right person takes judgement. Bringing them on board takes understanding.
